Early Life and Education

Balendra Shah was born on April 27, 1990, in Naradevi, Kathmandu, Nepal. He is the youngest son of Ram Narayan Shah, an Ayurvedic practitioner, and Dhruvadevi Shah. His paternal ancestral home is in Mahottari District, while his maternal family hails from Dhanusha District. The family moved to Kathmandu after his father was posted to the Naradevi Ayurvedic Hospital.

Balendra completed his 10+2 education at V.S. Niketan Higher Secondary School in Kathmandu. He then pursued a Bachelor of Engineering (BE) in Civil Engineering from Himalayan Whitehouse International College. Furthering his studies, he obtained a Master of Technology (MTech) in Structural Engineering from Visvesvaraya Technological University (VTU) in Karnataka, India.

Music Career

Balendra's passion for music and poetry began at an early age. He released his first single, "Sadak Balak", in 2012, which he had written during his ninth grade. His breakthrough came in 2013 when he participated in the YouTube battle rap series Raw Barz, gaining prominence in the Nepali hip-hop scene. Known for his sharp lyrics and social commentary, he became a significant figure in the Nephop (Nepali hip-hop) community.

Political Career

In December 2021, Balendra announced his candidacy for the Mayor of Kathmandu Metropolitan City as an independent candidate. His campaign focused on issues such as waste management, traffic control, anti-corruption measures, and the preservation of Kathmandu's cultural heritage. On May 26, 2022, he won the mayoral election with 38.6% of the vote, defeating candidates from major political parties. He was sworn in as the 15th Mayor of Kathmandu on May 30, 2022, marking a significant shift in the city's political landscape.

Personal Life

Balendra Shah is married to Sabina Kafle, a public health professional. The couple resides in Gairigaun, Tinkune, Kathmandu. Balendra's multifaceted career as an engineer, musician, and politician has made him a prominent figure in Nepal, especially among the youth.
