Early Life and Education

Pushpa Kamal Dahal, born Ghanashyam Dahal on December 11, 1954, in Lewade, Dhikur Pokhari, near Pokhara, Nepal, hails from a Brahmin Hindu family. He adopted the name "Prachanda," meaning "fierce," during his matriculation examination. At the age of eight, his family migrated to the Terai region, settling in Chitwan District. Dahal completed his studies at the Institute of Agriculture and Animal Science (IAAS) in Rampur, Chitwan, earning a diploma in agriculture. Subsequently, he worked as a schoolteacher in a village until 1979.

Political Journey

Dahal's political career began in 1981 when he joined the Communist Party of Nepal (Fourth Convention). He later became the general secretary of the Communist Party of Nepal (Mashal) in 1989, which eventually transformed into the Communist Party of Nepal (Maoist). As the leader of the CPN (M), he spearheaded the Nepalese Civil War (1996–2006), leading an armed rebellion against the monarchy. The conflict resulted in over 17,000 deaths and culminated in the abolition of Nepal's monarchy and the establishment of a federal democratic republic.

Prime Ministerial Tenure

Prachanda has served as Nepal's Prime Minister on three occasions:

  1. First Term (2008–2009): He became the first Prime Minister of the Federal Democratic Republic of Nepal in August 2008. His tenure ended in May 2009 after his attempt to dismiss the then army chief was opposed by President Ram Baran Yadav.

  2. Second Term (2016–2017): Prachanda returned to power in 2016 as part of a rotational agreement with the Nepali Congress. He resigned in 2017 to make way for Congress' Sher Bahadur Deuba.

  3. Third Term (2022–2024): He was sworn in as Prime Minister again in December 2022, leading a coalition government. His tenure ended in July 2024 following a failed motion of confidence in parliament.

Personal Life

Prachanda married Sita Poudel in 1969 when he was 15 years old. They had three daughters, including Renu Dahal, and a son. Sita Poudel passed away in July 2023. Prachanda is known for his atheistic beliefs, having ceased practicing Hinduism during his teenage years.
