Early Life and Education

Sher Bahadur Deuba was born on June 13, 1946, in Ashigram, a remote village in Dadeldhura District, located in the far-western region of Nepal. He hails from a Thakuri (Rajput) family, a group traditionally associated with the Kshatriya varna in Hindu society. Deuba received his early education at Ashigram Primary School, followed by secondary education at Mahendra Higher Secondary School and Sitaram Higher Secondary School in Doti District. He later enrolled at Tri-Chandra College in Kathmandu for his higher education.

Political Career

Early Political Involvement

Deuba's political journey began in the early 1990s when he joined the Nepali Congress (NC), a centrist political party in Nepal. In 1991, he was elected as a Member of Parliament from Dadeldhura District. His political acumen and leadership skills led to his appointment as the Minister for Home Affairs in the NC government.

Prime Ministerial Terms

Sher Bahadur Deuba has served as Nepal's Prime Minister on five separate occasions:

  1. 1995–1997: Deuba first assumed the role of Prime Minister during a period of political instability.

  2. 2001–2002: He returned to power amid escalating Maoist insurgency and political unrest.

  3. 2004–2005: His third term was marked by efforts to address the ongoing conflict and governance challenges.

Sher Bahadur Deuba is married to Arzu Rana Deuba, a prominent figure in Nepalese civil society. They have a son, Jaiveer Singh Deuba. Deuba's family background and personal experiences have significantly influenced his political perspectives and leadership style.
